As with many university buildings, the School of Economics and Law Library was dictated by the financial restrictions of a publicly funded building and the precise functional requirements of a teaching facility. Striking a different chord to the 1970s university, the new buildings form a sequential group, integrating the campus with the woods along the river that determine the site‘s perimeter. Two rectangular volumes - one housing the classrooms for Economic Science, the other the Law Library - lie parallel to each other, separated by a courtyard planted with lime trees. The library extends over three levels, and is faced on one side with a glazed curtain wall protected by a screen of timber louvres that shades the galleries and breaks up the buildings‘ regular geometry. A striking narrow glass volume lies diagonally across the site, creating a tension between the parallel structures. It is a visual and physical link that unifies the overall project and provides the key circulation areas. By night, blue lighting that runs the length of the flooring illuminates the glazed corridors. The budgetary constraints necessitated careful consideration of the materials; while the laminated glass and anthracite zinc cladding is economically viable, it also fuses the transparency of a social environment with the longevity suitable for a place of learning.
