The slate‘s flagship institution, the University of Wisconsin Madison supports a population of more than 42,000 students and 1 7.000 employees in the heart of Wisconsin‘s second-largest city. The UW is nationally recognized for the beauty of its campus, which stretches more than three miles along the shoreline of Lake Mendota and comprises some of the state‘s oldest and most historically significant buildings. Yet challanges arose as the university experienced significant growth in recent decades. As a result, newer buildings encroached on residential areas, bringing with them access problems, a lack of parking, a loss oF open space and diminished collegiate Feel. The linear shape of the campus, bordered by the lake and bisected with major roads and a rail line, provided additional challenges in terms of access, pedestrian and bicycle safety, parking, and the accommodation of anticipated future growth. The university hired SmithGroup JJR to address these issues, the First time a UW physical master plan had not been prepared by university staFF. JJFVs plan clarifies the physical organization of the campus, focusing on three areas that currently pose the greatest challenges and will likely see the majority of Future growth due to expanding research needs With significant participation From the university community and area residents, the plan calls For redirecting vehicular traffic patterns to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety, and to create open space to strengthen the campus image; defining appropriate infill building areas; and strengthening the physical links between the traditional central campus and newer campus growth areas. As the campus continues to evolve, the plan provides UW with a much needed framework for future development that stresses opportunity and Flexibility. |
