Founded in 1881. UConn‘s 4.400-acre main campus occupies a lovely New England setting in Storrs. Connecticut. 24 miles from the state‘s capital, Hartford. In 2000, the university was presented with a staggering opportunity: the "UConn 2000" state initiative, pledging one billion dollars over 10 years, to build, renew and enhance the university‘s infrastructure. With SmithGroup JJR‘s excellent reputation and long history of successful master plans. UConn turned to the firm to guide a team of planning experts, comprising campus planners, architects, traffic/parking experts and engineers. From the beginning, campus workshops encouraged participation of faculty, staff, students, administrators and community neighbors. The plan advances four primary elements. A newly established pedestrian core rebuilds the central campus for people, rather than cars. Cross-axial paths create a campus "main street", along which buildings and pedestrian circulation are focused The Forum, a new central plaza, serves as the physical and metaphoric heart of the campus, a natural and energetic gathering spot. Finally, the campus is delineated into "neighborhoods", each with its own identity and characteristics to build on. All aspects of the plan are designed on an intimate, human scale that encourages interaction and is in keeping with the scenic, rural character of the surrounding community. |
