Originally designed by Olmsted and Olmsted (and later redesigned by Charles Link), the original LSU campus at Baton Rouge was a beauty, with its cohesive architectural style, interior quadrangles, plazas and courtyards with wonderful vistas and gigantic oaks. Yet several decades later, the campus was showing its age. Infrastructure suffered from lack oF maintenance. University resources had been directed to new projects on undeveloped parcels on the edges of campus. A once walkable campus had become stretched to the point where many students drove to and from classes As part of the Diamond jubilee commemorating LSU‘s 75th anniversary on the Baton Rouge campus, the University selected SmithGroup JJR to develop a new master plan. JJR Focused on re-establishing a walkable campus core, providing general guidelines For architectural renovations and infill, and creating a Framework For the campus to grow in an orderly manner into new areas. Three Chancellors lead LSU, and the plan‘s success required the endorsement oF all three. JJR succeeded in gaining their support. Fostering a mutual agreement on new planning and design guidelines, a moratorium on new development, and a design review process For each new building project. |
