SmithGroupJJfVs master plan, prepared for the College oF William S. Mary, represented the most comprehensive physical planning effort ever undertaken by the 300-year old institution. It addressed all major property owned by the college, looking at land-use patterns, open space, pedestrian movement, traffic/parking and functional relationships among those elements Founded by Reverend James Blair under a charter from King William and Queen Mary in 1691, the College of William and Mary is the second oldest college in the contiguous United States. A key objective of the plan was to link the old historic campus, designed by Sir Christopher Wren and constructed between 1695 and 1699. with a series of newer campus areas, separated by a wooded ravine. ‘lb achieve this, [JK proposer! implementation of the "Jefferson Prospect", including enhancement of the sunken garden, Crim Dell, major pedestrian walks, a wildflower refuge, and ravine refinements including water features. It also advocated a new major pedestrian linkage by closing Landrum Drive; and a new centrally located student-oriented facility as a major focal point. As a follow-up to the master plan, JJR prepared plans for the transformation of the abandoned amphitheater into a campus focal point overlooking Lake Matoaka. The facility maximizes the unique natural setting afforded by lake views, mature forest and steep terrain. |
