The evolution of the University of Michigan campus, established in 1837. was to expand in all directions from the Central Campus in concentric rings. However, by 1961. the pattern of campus expansion had extended to the northeast, where the Medical Center was rapidly growing and the North Campus emerging, and towards the Athletic Campus to the southwest. The university retained jJR in 1962 to refocus and recreate the Central Campus as the single physical center Plan objectives included: Tb discover and identify Those campus patterns which were existing and worthy of preservation. Tb protect and fulfill these worthy patterns into a more complete order, efficiency and beauty for the existing campus. To chart the alternatives in accommodating growth in numbers of students and expansion of facilities. To establish the most appropriate and tffective actions which could occur within the next few years in accordance with a long-range expansion plan. The JJR plan examined academic organization, automobile circulation and parking, campus walkways, and open space. The concept development plan established detailed recommendations for the Central Campus. These were supported by design guidelines for formal academic avenues, informal academic avenues, major walkway systems, minor walkway systems, the campus green, major campus entry points, signs, planting and illumination. The study became the impetus for the development of Ingalls Mall as the formal Central Campus mall. The framework established by this seminal work continues to serve the university well today. |
