SmithCroup JJR worked with the University of Illinois at Chicago <UIC) to develop a long-range master plan for the 180-acre campus located immediately west of downtown Chicago. The fractured campus consists of two areas separated by an urban neighborhood: the Health and Science Center, home to UIC‘s hospital and medical school; and the "Circle Campus", an undergraduate commuter campus designed in the 1960s. The master plan focused on evaluating five key areas; development patterns, open space, pedestrian circulation, vehicular circulation/parking. utilities, and other services. Because any changes would require consensus among more than 20 community groups. JJR provided the university with a variety of tools-including models, sketches and computer spreadsheets-to let U1C explore and test a variety of detailed development alternatives. As a result, the university was able to share development alternatives with all interested parties and create a master plan that could be agreed upon by the disparate groups. The JJR plan for the Circle Campus addressed development opportunity sites along Halsted Street, including a new 68-acre acquisition south of Roosevelt Road. This area became the developer-led South Campus Development, including University Village, a mix of townhouses, mid-rise residences, dormitories, academic buildings, shops, restaurants, parking facilities and parks. JJR was instrumental in the creation of the athletic fields and green space improvements, encompassing 43 percent of the land. |
